Finding the safest budget car in SA

The Automobil Association of South Africa compile an Entry Level Vehicle Safety report annually which shines the spotlight on the potentially life-saving safety features of locally available entry level vehicles. The 2022 instalment of this report evaluated entry-level vehicles below the cost threshold of R270 000.

A points-based system is utilised in this report by awarding safety points to vehicles for the fitment of features such as ABS, ESC and airbags, while additional points are awarded to vehicles crash tested under the NCAP system.

In addition to the scoring a safety affordability index was applied to ensure that vehicles across the price range can be compared against each other. The result is a very accurate indication of the safety of cars in relation to their selling price.

The 2022 study included 38 models that had a retail price of less than R270 000 at the time.

Once all the vehicles were evaluated and calculations done, it was the Fiat 500 0.9 litre FWD SMT that emerged as the overall winner, followed by the Suzuki Celerio, Swift, Dzire and Baleno. The Toyota Starlet was in sixth place ahead of the Honda Amaze, Suzuki Ignis and S-Presso.

Comparing Used Car Resale Values: Sedans, SUVs and Bakkies

Comparing Used Car Resale Values: Sedans, SUVs and Bakkies

Gone are the days of excitingly browsing through the used cars for sale in the newspaper or clicking “next” online. Car shopping today is serious business for those on a budget who urgently need a set of wheels to get them moving.

When it comes to buying used cars for sale, understanding resale value is crucial. Doing so will help you make an informed choice that will benefit you for years to come.

With this in mind, we compare the resale values of sedans, SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) and bakkies in the pre-owned market.

Understanding Resale Values

Understanding resale values can be tricky for those who have no prior knowledge of this concept in the automotive retail world. Essentially, the resale value of a car reflects the overall brand reputation it has acquired, as well as the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, and mileage. The one factor that can have a significant impact on the value is market demand, which can cause prices to spike or fall.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

For car buyers, high resale values mean larger price tags. But excellent resale valuations are actually beneficial to you, the buyer, in the long run, because high resale values mean lower depreciation. This means that the vehicle in question will hold up its value over time.

In the long run, you can expect decreased ownership costs, which can end up being a pretty penny if unplanned for. Moreover, the value of a car can have a direct correlation to its financing terms; in this case, you can expect more favourable rates than if you had bought a car with a low resale value.

Lastly, if you look towards the future, you will understand the advantage you have over other second-hand cars on the market. This is because your car will hold its value, making it more appealing if you decide to trade in or sell it later on.

When shopping for used cars for sale, consider your needs, lifestyle, and budget. Sedans offer buyers affordable comfort, albeit traditional-looking. SUVs can be the perfect upgrade because of their large cargo room and capabilities on and off the road. Bakkies make the ideal investment for those who require a powerful engine that will rule the worksite and comfortably cater to the whole family without much hassle.

Weighing Up Your Options

That said, with the timeless appeal of sedans, it’s easy to understand why their resale values remain consistent throughout the years. They provide comfort, affordability, and efficiency. Like the Volkswagen Polo Vivo Sedan—a three-trimline range that promises an easy commute no matter the journey. It comes with an average engine of 1.6 litres. This latest derivative gives you manual and automated tiptronic transmission options.

Next in line is the versatile SUV, prominently featured on our roads today. These cars generally uphold high resale values because of the high demand, which is easy to understand because of their spacious interiors, modern amenities, and stylish design. This is particularly evident in the exceptional Hyundai Santa Fe. A range of three variants are fitted with a 2.2-litre engine and a DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) gearbox as standard.

Lastly, we have bakkies—the ultimate prize for many because of how resilient and efficient these vehicles are. Their ability to handle anything thrown at them makes them the go-to choice for South Africans, which explains why they are so popular. The Nissan Navara, for example, is equipped with a 2.5-litre engine, manual and automatic transmission options, and both 4x2 and 4x4 derivatives.

Having an understanding of resale values will make shopping for used cars for sale that much easier. Whether you have your eye on a conventional sedan, ingenious SUV, or all-powerful bakkie, we have just what you are looking for.

From sedans to SUVs and bakkies, discover exceptional quality at affordable prices in Motus Select’s lineup of used cars for sale. Top it all off with fantastic resale value!

Isuzu unveil Arctic Trucks version of latest D-Max

Isuzu unveil Arctic Trucks version of latest D-Max

As the range topping model in the D-Max line up, the AT35 appeals to buyers who want to stand out from the crowd, as well as those aiming to exploit the vehicles adventurous nature and its remarkable off-road capabilities.

Isuzu have unveiled an Arctic Trucks version of their latest D-Max, which comprises raised suspension, 35-inch wheels and the aggressive bodywork to go along with it.

The Isuzu D-Max AT35 was designed in collaboration with Arctic Trucks, which is renowned for producing some of the most capable overlanding vehicles on the planet.

As the range topping model in the D-Max line up, the AT35 appeals to buyers who want to stand out from the crowd, as well as those aiming to exploit the vehicles adventurous nature and its remarkable off-road capabilities.

The design of the D-Max Arctic AT35 means that there is no mistaking this model for a standard bakkie thanks to aggressively flared wheelarch extensions along with the increased ride height and wider track.

Also fitted are AT35 chrome badges on the front fenders and rear tailgate, wider profile side steps for easier access to the cabin and Arctic Truck mudflaps. The AT35 rides on 35-inch BF Goodrich all terrain tyres mounted to distinctive 17x10-inch AT black alloy wheels.

Traditionally these kits are fitted by Arctic Trucks or their approved dealers but what makes the Isuzu D-Max Arctic AT35 unique is that it is assembled at the Isuzu Motors South Africa plant in Struandale, ensuring the same build quality as regular D-Max models. The Struandale plant is the only facility in the world accredited by Arctic Trucks to produce the D-Max AT35.

Muscular bodywork enhancements are added in a dedicated Arctic Trucks conversion area in the body shop, where Isuzu’s most skilled artisans and technicians craft the bigger wheel wells and arches required to accommodate the 35-inch tyres and beefed up suspension which comprises a specially developed lift kit and Bilstein dampers. This increases ground clearance from 232mm to 266mm while also improving the 4x4 statistics in other areas too. The AT35 boasts an approach angle of 33 degrees, a departure angle of 23 degrees and a break over angle of 34 degrees, which are unrivalled in the local bakkie market.

The D-Max’s proven part-time four-wheel drive system is retained, offering the choice of two-wheel drive for on-road use, as well as four-wheel drive high and low-range and an electronic rear differential lock.

The AT35 is powered by Isuzu’s well-proven 3.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine which delivers 140kW at 3 600rpm and 450Nm from 1 800rpm in its latest iteration. It is mated to the latest specification six-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, the AT35 features the same level of specification as the range topping D-Max V-Cross. However, in this case the leather-trimmed seats are embroidered with the AT35 logo, which also adorns the gearshift shroud and floor mats.

Based on the top of the range D-Max V-Cross 4x4, the AT35 is available via special order through Isuzu’s local dealer network, with limited production numbers guaranteeing exclusivity.

The AT35 is covered by the same comprehensive warranty, roadside assistance and service plan as the standard D-Max which includes a five-year/90 000km service plan, five-year/120 000km warranty and roadside assistance.
