Test Driving a Used Car

Test Driving a Used Car
Test driving a car is very important so that you can see how it feels on the road and make sure all its equipment works correctly. By test driving the used car you can asses every aspect of it.
  • Test drive the used car on different types of road and always  drive of at least 15 minutes
  • Before you drive the used car make sure that it has adequate car insurance cover
  • Check the used car for excessive smoke and unusual noises when you start the car
  • There should be no unusual noises and vibrations when you check how the gears, brakes, steering and suspension work
These are the basic guidelines on how to take a used car for a test drive. The test drive is a very important aspect in helping you decide whether to buy a used car.

Basic important rules
  • Before you test drive the car make sure you&rsquore insured as you may only get third party cover to drive other cars
  • If your car insurer is not willing or able to offer you good, cheap car insurance cover, then temporary car insurance for the day can protect you for the  test drive
  • If you are stopped or involved in an accident whilst test driving the used car, you will need to show proof of your car insurance, so make sure you have it with you
  • To guarantee they the seller is the documented owner of the used vehicle, you should only meet a private seller at their home address or a trader at their premises

What to check on the car

  • Make sure that you only start the car when the engine is cold as this is when starting problems, excessive exhaust smoke and unusual noises are most visible
  • Maintenance or parts might be neded If the car struggles to start
  • Steam or a small amount of white exhaust smoke when you start the car is normally fine, and expect more smoke on cold or humid days. Blue, excessive white or black smoke can indicate internal oil leaks, head gasket failure or a poorly-tuned engine work will be required in these circumstances
  • A hole in the exhaust isindicated when you can hear excessive exhaust noise. If you can hear any rattles, these may be caused by a worn bracket and are usually cheap and easy to replace
  • It&rsquos normal for the engine speed to rise to just over 1,000rpm for a few minutes, and then settle to less than 1,000rpm when starting from cold. If the engine speed refuses to stay consistent, it will need attention. Air conditioning systems affect some cars&rsquo engine speed when stationary, so turn it off for an accurate test
  • Cars with power steering often produce a slight whining sound when turning the steering wheel of the used motor car from one side to the other, but it should not be excessive. It should require consistent effort to turn the wheel and there should be no bumps, screeching or knocking noises
  • Test the handbrake by gently releasing the clutch in a manual car to feel the handbrake resisting forward movement. If the car moves easily, the handbrake is ineffective and will need adjustment

During the used car test drive

  • Drive at slow, moderate and motorway speeds and take the car on a variety of roads and road surfaces
  • To get a good idea of the used car that you are driving you should spend between 15 to 30 minutes test driving it
  • Make sure that each gear engages smoothly if it is a manual car
  • If the clutch releases near the top when you release it and fels heavy, the car may need a new clutch quite soon
  • Automatic gearboxes should offer smooth gear selection and shouldn&rsquot be noisy. Check it &lsquokicks down&rsquo by accelerating hard when cruising, this should force the gearbox to change gear and produce a burst of acceleration
  • During the test drive its important to take the car on at least one stretch of dual carriageway or highway
  • There could be worn suspension and steering parts if you can only turn the steering wheel a few degrees without anything happening
  • The used car could have crash damage if the steering does not feel the same on left and right-hand corners if so, the suspension could need attention
  • Noisy, bouncy or shaky suspension probably indicate that the suspension needs replacing, make sure that the suspension soaks up bumps quietly and effectively, without juddering or shaking the inside of the car
  • When you accelerate, check for excessive smoke in the exhaust from the rear view mirror
  • Brake sharply to see if the car pulls to the left or right. Vibrations or noises from the brakes and suspension could indicate worn or damaged parts which need fixing

Test driving a new car

When you are interested in buying a new car , its not likely that you will be able to test the actual car, but there should be a similar one available for you to test.
  • Ask the new car dealer to arrange a test drive in a car that&rsquos as close as possible to the new car that you&rsquore looking to buy
  • It's best not to have the pressure of a new car salesman in the passenger seat and five mins test drive is not sufficient, so ask to borrow the car for an evening or a weekend so you can get familiar with it
  • Make sure you have sufficient visibility, you can get comfortable behind the wheel and you are satisfied with the way the car drives
  • Load up the car to see how it copes, especially if you carry passengers and/or luggage regularly

Car Diagnosis A Quick Guide To Warning Lights

Car Diagnosis A Quick Guide To Warning Lights

Sure, many things could go faulty with cars and often we don't consider many of them to be all that serious. A squeaky window or seatbelt that won't click into place without a few tries may be annoying but they don't affect your car's mechanical performance. However, warning lights are installed in your car's console for a very good reason they all indicate when an urgent or serious problem has arisen and you should immediately take action if any of them light up. The moment you notice a warning light coming on, find the closest safe area to pull over as continuing to drive can very likely completely wreck your car. We're going to review some of these lights and what they indicate so that you can go to a car service and repair shop to get it corrected.

Check Engine Light

If you see this light turn on, you must get your car to an automotive specialist as soon as possible. This light can activate for several possible reasons, including a possible faulty sensor, it typically indicates that something is seriously wrong with your car's engine.

Oil Pressure Light

When your car detects critically low levels of engine oil, this light goes on.  You may have sprung a leak or crack in your oil tank or rings, or you may just have forgotten to fill up with oil. Either way, this problem causes your engine to overheat and can cause severe damage, so pull over as soon as possible and call for help. Or, if you're very close to a petrol station, park there and refill your oil tank until you can determine the definite cause of the problem.

Brake System Light

Another serious indicator, you may simply be driving with your handbrake up, or there may be more serious problems with our brake fluid or brakes. A quick way to confirm the issue is by pumping the brakes if they feel soft or the brake pedal drops without much resistance, you need to have your car checked out.

Temperature Light

This one is quite straight forward your car is overheating and suffering damage the longer you keep driving it in this condition. You may just be out of coolant liquid, but there are also other possible causes.

Check Battery Light

If your battery light comes on, you are either dealing with a dead battery that needs to be replaced, or there may be a more serious issue causing failed power distribution.

If you experience any of these issues, it's best to take your car service and repair shop to avoid any further - and very costly - damages from happening.

Budget Options For Used SUVs

Budget Options For Used SUVs

Every so often our lives change and as they do, so do our lifestyle needs. If you've realised your current car isn't big enough to accommodate your growing family, you may be considering upgrading and finding a suitable used SUV for sale. If your budget is fairly tight and you want to ensure you get the best value for what you can afford, read on as we list some of the best budget options available locally.

Honda CR-V

Honda has long been a trusted name in the automotive industry and the CR-V has been a firm favourite among prudent buyers since it was initially launched nearly 30 years ago. It's ideal as a family car and will be a great companion on long road trips and holidays to the coast, just as much as the usual day-to-day work and school runs. Features vary somewhat, depending on which edition you're looking at, but the benefit of buying a used model that has a few years on the clock is that you'll be more likely to pick up a higher-end variant at an affordable price. Four-wheel drive, ABS, traction control and the usual array of SUV features come standard in all models but you will enjoy features including leather seats, sunroof, climate control, steering wheel controls and an upgraded audio system if you scout around for an upper-end variant.

You can expect to pay anywhere from R50,000 for a 2004 model, to R250,000 for a 2015 model.

KIA Sportage

Because it's always been a very popular SUV in South Africa, you won't struggle to find quite a range of options in terms of used Sportage models. Sporting a more modern design than the Honda CR-V in similar year classes, the Sportage is a fun, reliable and very well-equipped SUV that won't leave you wanting for much. This model has won many awards in a variety of classes, including the 'Crossover of the year' and 'Best car for towing' awards at the 2019 Auto Trader New Car Awards. It is also praised for its stability on the road and has been the top-selling KIA model in the UK for years. Last year it also won the award for 'Best used car' and 'Used car of the year' in the Auto Express and Scottish Car Of The Year Awards, respectively.

Models produced around 2006 go for about R60,000, while more recent variants will set you back in the region of R250,000 for a 2015 model.

Suzuki SX4

The SX4 is quite a bit smaller than most SUV models, but the interior was designed in such a way that you'll get the impression and feel of a much bigger vehicle. It's a sporty, compact mini SUV that will be ideal for a small family or people who enjoy weekends away or trips to the beach. Roof racks come as a standard feature on all models, giving you even more freedom to transport bikes, surfboards or other larger items. The SX4 was designed as a budget option to the buyer market, so don't expect lavish features and finishes from this model. You'll find it's a comfortable drive with a practical interior, so if simplicity and reliability is what you're after, this might be a good match.

Price-wise, you can pick up a 2011 model for around R50,000, while the last and most recent models will set you back about R180,000 for a 2015 model.

Daihatsu Terios

If you haven't seen a lot of new Daihatsu models on the road lately, it's because the company pulled out of South Africa in 2015. They were very popular for their Terios and other models, however, and you won't have to worry about maintenance, parts or servicing support as they were acquired by Toyota a few years ago. If you're not all too familiar with the manufacturer, Daihatsu has a strong reputation for building extremely durable vehicles that can comfortably take on heavier weather conditions with impressive road grip and control. It is very straight-forward in terms of looks and features, but you'll have access to fundamentals like remote central locking, air conditioning, electric windows, as well as classic SUV elements including a roof rack and permanent all-wheel drive.

You can pick up a 2008 model for around R50,000 and can expect to pay in the region of R135,000 for a 2014 model.

As they were designed to endure rugged and daunting road conditions, SUVs are designed and built to be exceptionally durable, which is why even an older used model will provide you with many years of comfortable and reliable driving. Contact us if you'd like to be notified when new stock arrives or if you'd like to discuss how we can assist you with claiming your own budget used SUV for sale.

7 Reasons Why A Used Kia Car Is The Best Choice

7 Reasons Why A Used Kia Car Is The Best Choice

When you're shopping around for a replacement car or a first-time vehicle, it's understandable that the sheer variety of models and manufacturers can be overwhelming to sift through. After all, each year we see the arrival of even more new car brands that are trying to get a foothold on our local shores and compete with more established names in the industry. Several years ago, KIA was one of those as yet unknown foreign arrivals that were met with reluctant gazes at first. Today, however, they are one of the most popular and trusted names in the car buyer market and most of us know of someone who has one parked in their garage. They've come a long way over the years and we can strongly recommend KIA with the belief that a used Used KIA for sale will give you years and many thousands of kilometres of driving pleasure.

1. An Impressive Amount Of Awards And Accolades

Globally the brand has succeeded in claiming some of the top accolades for quality. These include Highest Ranked in Initial Quality for the Soul, Cerato and Sorento in the U.S. for three consecutive years, the number one brand for several years according to the prestigious JD Power awards, the 2014 Standard Bank People's Wheels Award, and several of the models being nominated and winning car of the year awards locally and globally. In 2017, The Telegraph put them 3rd out of 20 for the most reliable car brands. CNN ranked KIA 6th out of 10 in 2015, and their reputation has consistently excelled since then. In 2016 Kia was ranked the number 1 brand for reliability by J.D Power, which made it the first non-luxury brand to top the list since 1989.

2. Highly Competitive Pricing

Looking at the standard features you'll find in any KIA model, you'd immediately realise that it's almost unheard of to find such offerings at the price they sell their models for. Yet somehow they've managed to pull together a manufacturing plan that allows the everyday car buyer to have a lavish, upper-class driving experience without needing to wreck their financial health.

3. Features

KIA decided to make technological advancement a key goal in recent years and it shows. Their integrated control and entertainment systems and touch-screen consoles have become some of the best available, while their focus on giving drivers not only a means of transport but making every trip experience has paid off well. Everything, from the quality of the dashboard material to the carefully stitched upholstery or leather seats, reflects their keen eye for detail, dedicated passion and unwavering commitment to high-quality standards. Whether you opt for a Rio or a Sportage, you'll find cutting-edge technology integrated seamlessly with a superb driving experience and exceptional mechanical reliability.

4. Safety

The brand did not neglect safety as a key priority during their development process, as they are also ranked as one of the safest cars in the world to drive. The Sportage and Sorento scored a full five-star rating according to the IHHS safety ranking evaluation, while their other models comfortably hit the four-star achievement.

5. Strikingly Beautiful Design

Earlier on in the manufacturer's history, their cars weren't much to look at. The last decade, however, has seen the company evolving and re-emerging as one of the most aesthetically attractive manufactures in the world. This is greatly due to world-leading automobile designer Peter Schreyer, who joined the team in 2006 and completely overhauled the look and personality of the brand. He made his name in the industry thanks to his novel design of the Audi TT and brought KIA their signature tiger-eye headlight design.

6. Consistently Dependable Performance

The brand offers a 5-year/unlimited mileage warranty to new car buyers, which is great news for people who travel far more extensively than most drivers do. They can vary confidently offer this, considering their track record of achieving awards for reliability year in and out.

7. Sales Figures

Since the Sportage was launched, KIA has sold more than three million units. In September of 2020, the U.S. branch of the manufacturer achieved the highest sales total in the history of the company's presence in the country, with 55,519 units sold. In South Africa, their top-selling models in 2018 were the Picanto and Rio, with their popular Sportage units still consistently selling, albeit a bit slower for that year.
